Join our team!!! The Ouachita Parish Public Library is located in the beautiful twin cities of Monroe/West Monroe in northeast Louisiana. The library system consists of 6 branches plus a bookmobile, with a 7th branch in the planning stages. Ouachita Parish Public Library serves a population of 146,985 and is proud to be one of the top libraries in the state.

The library offers liberal benefits, including an excellent retirement system, vacations, sick leave and health insurance. After offered employment at the Ouachita Parish Public Library, the applicant agrees to be tested and to successfully pass a drug screening in order to be added to the payroll. Present library employees are given three days priority in applying for the vacant position before outside applicants will be considered. Library employees may still apply after the designated deadline but priority will not be given.

Janitor – Ouachita Valley Branch – Assistant I

Answers to: Operations Coordinator & Branch Manager

General:

Unless otherwise specified, the follow list of duties will be done daily and in all department where applicable.

Nature of Work: 

To maintain the interior of the building in a clean and sanitary manner

Essential duties and Responsibilities:

Empty waste baskets, replace liners and dispose of waste into dumpsters
Dust all furniture
Dust all exposed filing cabinets, bookcases and shelves
Clean and sanitize all telephones
Clean and sanitize desk tops
Clean Entrance door glass – inside and out – and other doors with glass
Spot clean spills and stains on carpet
Dust and wet mop all foyers

Vacuum Schedule

Vacuum high traffic areas daily
Stack areas - every other  day
Children’s department  -very other day
Administrative offices   - weekly

Restrooms – Staff and Public

Clean, sanitize  and polish all fixtures and metal trim, including counters, commodes, urinals and sinks
Clean all glass and mirrors
Empty all containers and disposals and replace liners
Empty and sanitize interior of sanitary napkin containers
Spot clean walls, doors and partitions including removal of graffiti
Refill all dispensers to normal levels – paper goods, soap, etc
Sweep, damp mop and sanitize floors

Eating areas/Break room  (Public and Staff)

Damp clean and sanitize tabletops, seats and chair backs
Damp clean pedestals and legs of tables and chairs
Spot clean doors, door frames, light switches, etc
Sweep and damp mop

Weekly Duties General

Dust bookshelves where empty
Low dust all horizontal surfaces below 36” including baseboards
Dust window ledges
Vacuum furniture
Spot clean furniture and metal or wood parts of chairs
Wash trash cans
Wet mop floors               

Work Room

Sweep and mop the floors
Dust the furniture and cabinets             

Eating areas

All points covered under general
Dust all surfaces
Wipe down all counter tops, cabinets and appliances

Responsible for westside branches if special projects occur.  This is on an as needed basis when emergency or unforeseen projects occur.  Should have dependable transportation to travel to westside branches if the need arises.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have a good working knowledge of janitorial operations, equipment and supplies used in janitorial maintenance. 
Must have the ability to understand oral and written instructions
Must have the ability to work effectively with co-workers            

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed inside with occasional outside duties as required to perform janitor duties.  Requires standing, walking, climbing, stooping and lifting of items 25 lbs. and occasionally in excess of 25 lbs.  Common abilities of mobility and dexterity.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

                High School Diploma or Equivalent

Building and Grounds Aide
Beginning Salary: $8.14 per hour
40 hours per week

Answers to:  Operations Coordinator

Nature of Work:
            Responsible for maintaining clean and neat facilities
            Assists with set-ups for specific programs
            Performs some minor maintenance
           
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
            Disposal of exterior waste and debris at all branch facilities
            Fill vending machines
            Set-up tables and chairs for specific programs
            Assists in grounds maintenance at all branches
            Keep all departments supplied with copier paper.
            Assist with loading and unloading of freight as needed
            Assist with transport of materials between branches as needed
            Assist with keeping supply closets stocked
            Assist with moving of furniture as needed
            Perform janitorial duties when needed in absence of regular janitor.
            Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
            Must be able to function as a team with other mainteance and building staff under
                        supervision of Operations Coordinator
            Must have a valid driver's license or obtain license within 30 days of employment
(a driving record check will be performed on all employees driving Library vehicles)
Must be able to follow written and oral instructions
            Needs enough initiative to see things that need to be done without being told
            Basic knowledge of using basic tools for doing small repair/maintenance tasks

Physical Requirements:
            Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and exposure is to a variety of
                        weather conditions and temperatures.
            Work requires considerable and strenuous standing, stooping, climbing, walking and
                        lifting objects in excess of 74 lbs.
            Work areas are sometimes difficult or dangerous access

Required Qualifications:
            High school diploma or GED
