Here's a quick list of rules that will help keep young Internet users safe. The most important rule applies to parents, however: Be aware. Be aware. Be aware.
- Obey the rules your parents have set for you about the Internet.
- If any web site makes you uncomfortable, leave the site.
- Never tell anyone you meet on the Internet your name, address, phone number, password or credit card number without your parent's permission.
- Always use good "netiquette."
- Get your parents to check out a newsgroup before you spend time there.
- Don't use a screen name or chat room name that contains part of your name or information like your age or address.
- Don't ever answer a message that makes you uncomfortable. Tell your parents about it immediately.
- Never arrange a meeting with someone you meet online.
- Don't accept anything a stranger sends you over the Internet such as e-mail or the address of a web site.
